ACCOMMODATIONS: Guni-Guni Hostel: The Idyllic Transitory Stay in Puerto Princesa

Palawan, the famous archipelagic province in the south of the Philippines, boasts some of the country’s most amazing nature spots, lush terrains, vibrant marine life, beautiful beaches and scenic islands.

The most notable of these are: the limestone islands and breathtaking lagoons in El Nido; amazing marine life in the UNESCO site, Tubataha Reef; one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, the Subterranean River National Park in Puerto Princesa; the pristine coves and World War II ship wrecks in Coron; the sprawling beaches in Port Barton and San Vicente; the lush rain forests in Roxas; plus the exclusive resort islands of Amanpulo and Balabac.

These sought-after spots in Palawan come far and wide from its capital, Puerto Princesa, which houses the province’s main airport and public transport hub. On average, it takes 5 hours of land travel to get to these destinations, not to mention the boat rides needed to get to the remote destinations.

While a couple of night’s stay in Puerto Princesa City would be necessary to transition in between destinations, allowing for the chance to explore Palawan’s city capital, it would be more practical to check-in at a hostel, especially when the schedule of tour vans pick-ups are at 2am.

One hostel that is highly recommended by solo travelers and backpackers for its location and overall hospitality is Guni-Guni Hostel.

Illusion, as guni-guni translates in English, is a charming accommodation a few minutes drive away from the airport. This quaint hostel inspires a sense of home, adventure and camaraderie with snug dorm beds, hospitable staff, commendable amenities and appetizing food selection.

Fronted by its hip gastro bistro, Guni-Guni’s relaxing earth tones, welcoming yellow walls and poignant locally-made art pieces uplift the atmosphere of the hostel’s reception area and shared spaces, allowing every guest to lounge on the sofa set, watch TV, play board games, read books, play the guitar, use WIFI, work on their laptops, eat and drink with care and respect for oneself and others.

With five dorm rooms, two of which are 6-bed female dorm rooms, women guests are guaranteed feminine comfort and privacy. Each room has a separate toilet and shower rooms, padlocked lockers for every guest, as well as lighting and electrical outlets in each cubicle.

While Guni-Guni’s dorm rooms bring in guests from all over the world, Guni-Guni Bistro, on the other hand, draws in locals and expats who appreciate their international menu, wood-fire oven pizza promos, refreshing atmosphere.and Saturday Night Live Acoustic Music.
