NEWS: Entrepreneur Luke Johnson Emerges as Frontrunner in Potential Wahaca Acquisition

Hospitality entrepreneur Luke Johnson has emerged as the leading contender to acquire Mexican restaurant chain Wahaca, according to reports, following an auction process for the business.

The Sunday Times reported that the 14-site restaurant group has been working with advisers at BDO over the past several months to identify a new owner as part of a strategic sale process.

Johnson is widely recognized as one of the UK hospitality sector's most influential entrepreneurs, having played a key role in developing several of the country's best-known restaurant and retail brands.

He is best known for leading the expansion of PizzaExpress during the 1990s, transforming the company from a relatively small chain into a nationwide brand with more than 250 restaurants.

Throughout his career, Johnson has also been associated with a number of prominent hospitality businesses, including Signature Restaurants, which owned renowned dining brands such as The Ivy, Le Caprice, J. Sheekey, and Belgo. His investment portfolio has also included Strada, Gail's, Patisserie Valerie, Gaucho, Giraffe, and Feng Sushi.

Neither Wahaca nor Johnson has publicly confirmed details of the reported negotiations. If completed, the acquisition would mark another significant investment by Johnson in the UK restaurant industry.
