NEWS: Tourism Australia Steps Up Southeast Asia Marketing to Restore Travel Confidence Amid Middle East Disruptions

Tourism Australia has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring global travel confidence, announcing increased marketing efforts across Southeast Asia in response to ongoing disruptions caused by conflict in the Middle East.

New research from the national tourism organization indicates that 16% of international travellers are delaying or reconsidering trips to Australia. The impact is most pronounced among travellers from the UK and Europe, many of whom typically transit through major Middle Eastern hubs such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha. In March alone, 50% of airline bookings from the UK and Europe to Australia were routed through the Middle East.

Rob Dougan, Executive General Manager of Strategy and Culture at Tourism Australia, noted that these disruptions are affecting a critical segment of inbound travellers.

“That’s the region where we get our inbound travellers from. And now they are the travellers most impacted by airline routing changes in the Middle East,” Dougan said.

Despite these challenges, Tourism Australia reports strong travel intent across key Asian markets. China, Singapore, Hong Kong, and India are leading in sustained demand, with travellers in the region showing a preference for destinations closer to home during periods of uncertainty.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Robin Mack highlighted this trend as an opportunity.
