NEWS: Western Sydney International Airport Takes Off, Welcoming First Passenger Flights

Australia’s newest international gateway opens with domestic services, followed by a growing network of international connections across Asia and beyond.
Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) is set to enter a new chapter in Australian aviation as it welcomes its first passenger flights on Sunday, October 25, marking a major milestone in the development of Sydney’s newest aviation hub.
Budget carrier Jetstar will make history as the first airline to carry passengers from the airport, with its inaugural flight departing for the Gold Coast. From opening day, Jetstar will operate four weekly services between Western Sydney and the Gold Coast, up to 14 weekly flights to Melbourne, and three weekly flights to Brisbane.
The airport’s international operations will begin the following day, October 26, when Air New Zealand launches three weekly services between Auckland and Western Sydney. The new connection will give travellers another option for flying between Australia and New Zealand while expanding access to Sydney’s rapidly developing western region.
International Connections Set to Expand
Western Sydney International’s route network is expected to grow in the coming months, with several major airlines preparing to introduce additional services.
Singapore Airlines will launch daily flights between Singapore Changi Airport and Western Sydney on November 23, strengthening connections to one of Asia’s leading aviation hubs and providing travellers with access to onward destinations across the region.
Vietnamese carrier Vietjet is scheduled to begin twice-weekly services between Ho Chi Minh City and Western Sydney on January 10, 2027. The airline plans to increase the frequency to three flights per week in March.
Looking further ahead, Qatar Airways has announced plans to introduce services between Doha and Western Sydney from December 2027, potentially expanding the airport’s reach into the Middle East and connecting passengers to a wider global network.
A New Gateway for Western Sydney
Located at Badgerys Creek, approximately 45 kilometres from Sydney’s central business district, Western Sydney International is designed to serve the growing population and economic needs of the region.
One of the airport’s key features is its planned 24-hour operation, offering airlines greater flexibility in scheduling flights and providing passengers with additional travel options.
The airport’s opening also marks an important step in diversifying Sydney’s aviation infrastructure, creating another gateway for domestic and international travel as demand for air services continues to evolve.
With domestic flights beginning on October 25 and international services following a day later, Western Sydney International is poised to play an increasingly important role in connecting communities, supporting tourism and strengthening Australia’s links with key destinations around the world.
As more airlines introduce new routes over the coming months and years, travellers will have more opportunities to fly directly from Sydney’s west, bringing the region closer to destinations across Australia and the international travel network.
