Despite reports from the travel industry of shorter booking windows, holiday river cruises are bucking the trend, with many sailings for this festive season nearly sold out. River cruise lines are urging travelers and travel advisors to plan ahead for 2026 departures to secure the best stateroom options.

Viking Cruises reports that 64% of its 2026 Christmas market cruises are already sold, with virtually no availability remaining for the 2025 season, according to Richard Marnell, Executive Vice President of Marketing. "We encourage guests and their travel advisors to book as early as possible for the widest selection in stateroom categories and departure dates," Marnell said.
Uniworld Boutique River Cruises remains one of the few lines offering last-minute availability. As of November 21, four departures of its Magical Parisian Holiday itinerary; round-trip from Paris and including stops in Rouen and Vernon, still have space for travelers seeking a festive getaway.
Other operators report high occupancy across the board. Amadeus River Cruises’ 2025 sailings are nearly full, with the earliest availability now for December 2026, said Marketing Director Victoria Singleton.
AmaWaterways, known for its popular Christmas offerings, sold out all 2023 and 2024 market sailings, prompting the expansion of its Festive Delights itineraries in November and early December to accommodate more guests, noted Chief Sales Officer Alex Pinelo.
Avalon Waterways’ 2025 Christmas market cruises are 97% booked, with President Pam Hoffee noting the company has increased capacity for two consecutive years and plans further expansion for 2026.
Similarly, Scenic Group, parent of Emerald Cruises & Tours and Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, added three departure dates this year and anticipates adding more next year.
Tauck is doubling capacity on its Christmas Markets on the Rhine itinerary for 2027 and will return with its new Seine: Holiday Magic cruise in 2026, following a rapid sellout this year. The eight-day itinerary offers travelers the festive spirit of Paris, Christmas markets, and additional non-holiday excursions throughout France.
With strong demand and limited availability, cruise lines are sending a clear message: travelers looking for a magical holiday river cruise experience should plan early to avoid disappointment.
