Wendy Wu Tours Australia has released its latest report, The Journey Ahead, challenging common perceptions about travel in Asia and dismissing concerns around cost, cultural differences, geopolitical tensions, and pollution. The findings reveal that Australians who explore Asia are discovering a very different reality.
According to the report, nearly half of travellers were impressed by the friendliness of locals (49%), affordability (47%), and stunning landscapes (43%).
Simon Bell, Managing Director of Wendy Wu Tours Australia, commented:
"We are witnessing an exciting evolution in Australian travel. People are slowing down, connecting more deeply, and prioritizing experiences over checklists. Whether it’s exploring Asia for the first time or revisiting a favourite destination like Japan, Australians are redefining what it means to travel with intention."
Japan remains Australia’s number one travel destination, attracting more than one million visitors between July 2024 and June 2025. The report notes that repeat travellers are increasingly venturing beyond Tokyo and Kyoto, seeking scenic towns and immersive experiences.

The research also highlights a shift towards slower, more intentional travel. Australians are placing greater emphasis on depth over speed, motivated by concerns around overcrowding, tourist levies, local protests, environmental impact, and a desire to discover less-traveled locations.
The Journey Ahead underscores that Asia continues to captivate Australian travellers, offering rich cultural experiences, stunning landscapes, and meaningful connections for those willing to explore beyond the surface.
