International tourist spending across Europe is projected to increase by 11% in 2025, reaching a record-breaking US$838 billion, according to the latest research from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

The report identifies France and Spain as the top-performing destinations poised to attract the highest number of international visitors over the next year. This upward trend in European tourism is occurring as the United States anticipates a 7% decline in inbound travel, due to a range of contributing factors.

WTTC President and CEO Julia Simpson commented, “We expect many Canadian and Mexican travellers to reconsider their travel plans in light of President Donald Trump’s trade and migration policies. Additionally, the strength of the US dollar is making travel to the United States less appealing for many foreign visitors.”

Spain, in particular, is projected to see a 6% rise in international tourist spending compared to 2024, reaching approximately US$127.7 billion. Tourist arrivals are forecast to climb to between 98 and 100 million, surpassing the previous record of 94 million set last year.

According to the WTTC, Spain’s travel and tourism sector could contribute a historic €260.5 billion (US$296 billion) to the country’s GDP in 2025—equivalent to nearly 16% of the national economy.

“Spain remains a true global tourism powerhouse,” Simpson added. “The data highlights a vibrant, resilient, and ever-evolving sector that not only fuels economic growth, but also generates high-quality employment and fosters regional development.”

While Spain is expected to post impressive growth figures, France is forecast to maintain its lead in total international arrivals, underscoring Europe’s continued appeal as a top global travel destination.
