NEWS: Alishan Forest Railway Introduces Luxury Senli Train Experience

Travellers exploring Taiwan’s iconic Alishan mountain resort and national scenic area will soon enjoy a new level of comfort and style aboard the historic Alishan Forest Railway.

Set to debut in July, the railway’s newest addition, the Senli train, marks a luxury upgrade to the century-old line originally built in 1912. The first Senli train, consisting of an engine car and five elegantly designed carriages, arrived in August 2025 and is currently undergoing trial runs.

Trial operations will take place over a 40-day period this month along the Chiayi Station to Alishan Station route. Pending successful completion, full service of the Senli train will commence in July 2026.

By September or October, all five new locomotives and 26 carriages are expected to be fully operational, significantly increasing the railway’s capacity. Currently, only four trains serve the line, but the new fleet will better accommodate growing tourist numbers.

In conjunction with the Senli train’s launch, the existing Alishan Express will be repurposed as a local service, making additional stops at stations including Fenqihu and Shizilu. This adjustment aims to enhance accessibility to the Fenqihu Scenic Area, a popular destination for visitors.

The Alishan Forest Railway’s luxury upgrade combines modern comfort with the timeless charm of Taiwan’s mountainous landscape, offering both first-time and returning travellers a memorable journey through one of the country’s most treasured natural areas.
