Paper Plane

A stemmed glass with dark red liquid garnished with an orange peel on a stick. An orange slice sits beside it on a marble table.

A modern classic created in 2007 by Sam Ross. It’s approachable, slightly bitter, slightly sweet, and always impresses.

What You’ll Need

  • 3/4 oz Bourbon

  • 1/4 oz Aperol

  • 1/4 oz Amaro Nonino (or a gentler amaro if substituting)

  • 1/8 oz Fresh orange juice

Procedure

  1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker.

  2. Add some ice and shake hard for ~10 seconds.

  3. Double strain into a chilled glass.

  4. No garnish required (but a thin orange twist works if you like).

Why bartenders love it:

  • Equal-parts recipe = easy to remember.

  • Balanced between sweet, sour, and bitter.

  • Works as a gateway cocktail for guests new to amaros.
