PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: New to Project Management or Already Experienced? Find Your Ideal Certification

TAGUIG CITY, Philippines – Project management is such a multidisciplinary field. Professionals in technology, marketing, operations, construction, advertising, and other fields regularly manage timelines, budgets, stakeholders, risks, and deliverables. As projects become more complex, knowing how to approach them systematically can become an important professional advantage.
For professionals who want to formalize their project management knowledge, two of the best-known certifications from the Project Management Institute (PMI) are:
Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®); and the
Project Management Professional (PMP®).
Although both certifications are associated with the same professional discipline, they are designed for different stages of a person's project management journey.
CAPM: A Foundation for Project Management
The CAPM® certification is designed as an entry point into formal project management.
According to Carlo Cruz, Head of Project Management Programs at Enderun Extension, CAPM can be particularly useful for people entering project management, professionals looking to formalize their knowledge, and team members who want to build a stronger foundation.
“[It] is more of an introduction to formal project management knowledge,” Cruz shared.
CAPM does not require candidates to have years of experience leading projects. It only requires a secondary degree or equivalent, along with at least 23 hours of project management education before the examination.
That makes CAPM a potential starting point for fresh graduates and early-career professionals who want to learn the language, concepts, and frameworks used in professional project management.
PMP: Building Further on Project Experience
The PMP® certification, on the other hand, takes a different approach. Rather than serving primarily as an introduction to project management, PMP certification is designed for professionals with demonstrated project management experience.
“PMP is a little different because it dives more into experience and that experience maps against PMI’s project management framework,” Cruz says.
PMI currently has several eligibility pathways for PMP candidates. Depending on educational background, candidates generally need two to five years of project leadership experience, together with the required project management training.
For an experienced professional, taking the CAPM before the PMP is not required.
“If you are already seasoned in project management, have the relevant experience, and have handled multiple projects, then it makes sense to go directly for the PMP,” Cruz shared.
A Transferable Skill You Would Love To Maximize
Project management is both a career and a transferable skill set. Its principles can be applied whenever someone needs to plan, coordinate, and complete an initiative with a defined objective.
Marketing campaigns, business launches, technology implementations, events, and other organizational initiatives can all involve project management.
Cruz shared that he has encountered professionals from marketing and advertising agencies who have applied project management principles in their own work. One of the program instructors in Enderun Extension is even a healthcare professional and a Registered Nurse.
This is one reason project management knowledge can be useful even for professionals who do not intend to become full-time project managers.
