The World Food Expo is back again, and this time bigger and better. The booths were larger, the setups even more impressive than last time, exciting competitions, tasty freebies, educational showcases, and more. There’s something for everyone, from students to food and beverage business owners, as well as seasoned professionals in the industry. Much to see, much to buy, and even more to taste! Let us take a walk down memory lane on what went down during August 6-9 at the SMX Convention Center and World Trade Center in Pasay.
One thing you need to know about WOFEX is that one venue is simply not enough. There are so many participants and different facets of the industry to show that it cannot fit into one area alone. Usually, the Discovering Hospitality representatives like to split the event days by venue. A day or two per venue to really soak up everything that area has to offer. However, this time around, we discovered that there was a free shuttle between the two venues, which means you could go back and forth between the two quite easily. You could walk around the World Trade Center in the morning and watch some demonstrations or buy some goods, then head over to the other venue in the afternoon to catch the competition and get some nibbles or maybe a cup of coffee. The free shuttle service was speedy, the drivers were always nice, and you barely had to wait more than 10 minutes each time before being able to get a ride. The convenience really enhanced the overall experience of the event.
Now that we have covered the logistics, let’s talk about what there is to see. If you enjoy cooking shows, then you would have enjoyed all the cooking, baking, and beverage-making demonstrations. Some brands had their own chefs and presenters showcase their products. Whether it was the use of specific ingredients or the tools and equipment they were using, such as ovens or automatic cookers, it was not just entertaining but also educational. What’s nice about watching these demonstrations live is that you can ask questions and get answers immediately. The presenters are always attentive when it comes to the audience, and they even encourage you to ask questions. Some will even let you have a go, and most will let you taste the finished product.
Another wonderful thing about walking around is that you can explore and find new kitchen favorites and products. There were brands that I hadn’t seen before, and small businesses that were trying to break into the market. WOFEX is a wonderful platform not just for sellers but also for buyers. Maybe you are a business owner looking for better supplies or deals. There are many brands and companies to choose from during this expo, and you’d surely find what you are looking for. And in the off chance that you haven’t, it’s still a great way to network and create connections within the industry.
The event is not only for professionals and chefs. Even foodies who do not cook but love eating will enjoy this event. Every aisle you walk through will give you a handful of free samples to take home or to taste on the spot. If you are looking for something to do with your friends, you could all just eat your way through the event. You surely won’t regret paying for your ticket, and you’ll make some fond and delicious memories while you’re at it! However, I will warn you now that you will probably walk away with a bag full of jars and packets of products by the end of the day. There are so many deals, discounts, and interesting things that you can’t walk away empty-handed, especially when some of the prices are so affordable. Our team has learnt this lesson one too many times, ending the event walking out with spiced vinegars, dark chocolate, snacks, and more! It’s all part of the fun and adventure, and since WOFEX happens annually, you might as well make the most of it too.
If all of the networking, eating, and shopping is not enough excitement for you, there’s always The Philippine Culinary Cup, which takes place during WOFEX. There was a mix of foreign and local judges, and you can watch and access all the action. You’ll see both young and newcomers show their best, and also watch longtime professionals show us how it’s done. When it comes to the cake portion of the event, they always showcase the finished works of the participants. You can get up close to see the details and skills that were at play and admire the creations, and even take pictures or videos. Some cakes come with explanations to help you better understand the final product and its design, theme, and curation.
The overall atmosphere gets a little electric when the countdown for the timer ends, as you can hear students and colleagues cheer on one another. If you enjoy watching cooking showdowns on television, then you will enjoy watching The Philippine Culinary Cup. You can take a look at the schedule posted online and see all the different competitions and the times that they take place. You can pick and choose which ones you want to watch, and if you really want to close out the whole experience well, I suggest you go on the last day, when they announce the big winners.
WOFEX always does it well, and every year it gets more and more impressive. This year, it felt bigger, and the lively crowds definitely grew and grew as the days went by. I also noticed that there was a mix of all ages, which was nice to see. It further proves that there truly is something for everyone. If you were unable to attend this year’s event, don’t fret. WOFEX organizes regional events throughout the country as well aside from the big one in Manila. Check out their official website for information about their upcoming events and maybe even plan for your attendance next year at any of the following: Baguio, Visayas, Cagayan De Oro, and Mindanao.
