Cambodia has officially opened Techo International Airport (IATA code: KTI) on 9 September, welcoming travellers to a new gateway just 20 kilometres south of the capital city. Replacing the former Phnom Penh International Airport, the state-of-the-art facility has been designed to elevate air travel beyond transit, showcasing Cambodia’s cultural identity, modern vision, and world-class hospitality.
Design Inspired by Cambodia’s Heritage
Designed by renowned UK architecture firm Foster + Partners, Techo International Airport draws inspiration from Cambodia’s tropical climate, lush landscapes, and vernacular architecture. At the heart of the terminal, the central head house houses check-in, security, immigration, and retail spaces beneath a soaring tree-canopy-inspired ceiling. Warm neutral interiors, indoor greenery, and a lightweight grid-shell roof create a tranquil environment that floods the space with natural light.
Coffee, Art, and Cultural Moments
Among the highlights is a 181-metre Brown Coffee outlet designed by Phnom Penh-based HKA+Partners. The café features a monumental installation by acclaimed Cambodian artist Sopheap Pich, titled Birds Fly By Flapping Their Wings. Crafted from bamboo, metal, and enamel, the artwork is inspired by the seedpods of the native Thnong tree, shifting subtly in appearance as daylight changes — offering travellers both a moment of reflection and an iconic Instagram-worthy backdrop.
Built for Growth and Global Connectivity
The airport’s first phase includes the central head house and one aerofoil-shaped pier, designed to accommodate up to 13 million passengers annually. Future development plans include a second pier and a full-scale airport city, expanding capacity to 30 million passengers per year. With a focus on comfort, efficiency, and visual appeal, Techo International Airport aims to reduce travel stress while enhancing the excitement of air travel.
