FEATURES: The Rise of Halal-Friendly Tourism

Hong Kong emerges as the fastest-rising non-OIC destination, while Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines continue expanding Muslim-friendly services and infrastructure.

Asian tourism destinations are intensifying efforts to cater to the rapidly growing Muslim travel market by expanding Halal-certified facilities, improving Muslim-friendly infrastructure, and promoting inclusive travel experiences. From Singapore and Hong Kong to Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines, governments and tourism stakeholders are investing in services that make travel more convenient and welcoming for Muslim visitors.

According to the Mastercard-Crescent Rating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2025, Malaysia has once again secured the top position among destinations offering the most comprehensive Muslim-friendly travel experience. The country continues to be recognized for its extensive Halal-certified dining options, Muslim-friendly accommodations, prayer facilities, and well-established tourism infrastructure.

Sharing second place are Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), all of which continue to enhance their appeal through world-class tourism offerings and strong support for the needs of Muslim travelers.

Among destinations outside the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hong Kong has emerged as one of the region's biggest success stories. Ranked third among non-OIC destinations in the GMTI 2025, Hong Kong has made remarkable progress by investing heavily in Muslim-friendly tourism infrastructure.

The destination now boasts 61 CrescentRating-accredited hotels and 153 Halal-certified restaurants, providing Muslim visitors with greater confidence and convenience when planning their trips. These initiatives have earned Hong Kong the "Most Promising Muslim-Friendly Destination of the Year" award at the Global Muslim Travel Index Awards, recognizing its commitment to inclusive tourism and its growing reputation as a welcoming destination for Muslim travelers.

Taiwan is likewise strengthening its position as a preferred destination for Muslim visitors. The country now has more than 230 Halal-certified restaurants and hotels, certified by the Chinese Muslim Association. Many establishments have also introduced separate kitchens and food preparation areas to comply with Islamic dietary requirements, reflecting Taiwan's commitment to accommodating diverse cultural and religious needs.

Singapore continues to lead among non-OIC destinations, maintaining its reputation for inclusivity, multiculturalism, and high-quality Muslim-friendly services. The city-state's extensive network of Halal-certified dining establishments, accessible prayer facilities, and efficient transportation system make it a preferred destination for Muslim travelers from around the world.

Other Southeast Asian destinations are also making notable progress. Thailand has significantly expanded its range of Halal-certified restaurants, accommodations, and tourism services, particularly in popular tourist destinations. Meanwhile, the Philippines is steadily enhancing its tourism capacity by improving Halal-friendly services, increasing awareness among tourism stakeholders, and developing initiatives aimed at attracting more Muslim visitors.

The continued rise of Muslim-friendly tourism across Asia reflects the growing importance of the global Muslim travel market, one of the fastest-growing segments of international tourism. As destinations invest in inclusive infrastructure, culturally sensitive services, and Halal-compliant facilities, they are not only broadening their tourism appeal but also creating more welcoming experiences for travelers of diverse backgrounds.

With competition among destinations increasing, the expansion of Muslim-friendly tourism is expected to play an increasingly important role in driving visitor arrivals, strengthening regional tourism, and supporting sustainable economic growth across Asia.
