Malaysia Airlines Announces Leadership Transition Effective 31 January 2026

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has ay announced a planned leadership transition, as Captain Izham Ismail will step down from his role as Group Managing Director, effective January 31, 2026.
The MAG Board expressed its deep appreciation to Captain Izham for his “outstanding service and leadership,” noting his significant contributions throughout a tenure that guided the organization through critical phases of transformation and growth.

“Captain Izham has exemplified relentless commitment, integrity and passion in steering MAG forward,” the Board said. “His leadership has strengthened the Group, defined its strategic direction and cultivated a high-performance culture that positions MAG for continued success.”
Captain Izham’s career with Malaysia Airlines began in 1979 as a pilot. Over the decades, he progressed through numerous key leadership positions before being appointed Group Managing Director in December 2017. His tenure makes him the longest-serving chief executive in the airline’s history.
MAG also announced that Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar (“Captain Nasa”) will succeed Captain Izham in the newly defined role of President and Group Chief Executive Officer. A homegrown leader with over 30 years of experience in flight operations, management and strategic oversight across MAG, Captain Nasa has held multiple senior positions, most recently serving as Chief Operating Officer of Malaysia Airlines.
This leadership transition marks the beginning of a new chapter for MAG as the Group continues its journey toward long-term resilience and growth.
