Qantas and Airbus Unveil Next-Generation A350-1000ULR, Marking a New Era in Ultra Long-Haul Travel

Qantas, in partnership with Airbus, today revealed the first images of its groundbreaking A350-1000 Ultra Long Range (ULR) aircraft, heralding what the airline describes as “the final frontier of long-haul travel.”

Captured at the Airbus facility in Toulouse, the images showcase the state-of-the-art aircraft that will operate Qantas’ historic non-stop routes connecting Australia’s east coast directly with London and New York for the first time. These Project Sunrise flights will be the world’s longest commercial services.

Specially configured for ultra-distance operations, the A350-1000ULR features an additional 20,000-litre fuel tank and advanced onboard systems, enabling up to 22 hours of uninterrupted flight. The direct routes will reduce total travel time by up to four hours compared with today’s one-stop services.

“These flights will transform how people experience ultra long-haul travel, through science-backed design to minimize jetlag and maximize wellbeing,” said Qantas Group Chief Executive Vanessa Hudson.

Developed with input from leading aviation experts and sleep scientists, the aircraft’s cabin design is engineered from the ground up to enhance comfort and wellbeing. Unique lighting sequences, meticulously timed meal services, and advanced materials all contribute to a travel experience optimized for rest and recovery.

A major focus on space and comfort has resulted in a 238-seat layout, significantly fewer than the 300-plus seats typically found on A350-1000s. Among the standout features is a dedicated Wellbeing Zone, located between Premium Economy and Economy, offering stretch handles, guided video exercise programs, a hydration station, and a selection of refreshments.

Qantas is set to take delivery of the first of 12 A350-1000ULRs in late 2026. Commercial Project Sunrise flights are scheduled to commence in the first half of 2027, ushering in a new chapter in global travel and strengthening Australia’s direct connectivity with the world.
