EXCLUSIVE: Bernhard Ilming's Reflections on the opening of Manila Galleria Suites, now Holiday Inn Manila Galleria

In response to the insightful interview with Ms. Patria Puyat, recently former Cluster General Manager of the Crowne Plaza & Holiday Inn Manila Galleria, I felt inspired to share a few personal reflections, looking back nearly three decades to my own formative years in Manila.

When I was appointed in August 1991 as the Opening General Manager of the Manila Galleria Suites, an independent four-star hotel adjacent to Robinsons Galleria in Ortigas, I was given a rare professional privilege: the opportunity to build a hotel’s culture from the ground up. Everything was a blank slate,  policies, procedures, service philosophy, and, most importantly, the people.
