Types Of Tourism: Part 3

Once again we continue on with our learning series with another installment of Types of Tourism. Here are other types of tourism you may not have heard of before and what exactly they are all about. Some are pretty obvious but there are a couple that you may be unfamiliar with. Let’s get to it!

Fashion Tourism

This one is pretty straightforward. Of course, when we think of fashion we think of shopping and mostly our favorite brands. That is exactly what fashion tourism is all about - traveling to a specific country or city to shop, attend fashion events, and explore and experience the fashion of that area. Some examples of famous fashion events around the globe are Paris Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week, Met Gala, CFDA Fashion Awards, and many more. Tourists can not only visit museums dedicated to fashion but there may also be other activities in the area such as guided tours, seminars, and maybe even some clothes or accessories-making workshops. Some tours even provide a behind-the-scenes experience wherein you can see the designer's process and seamstresses at work. Some famous fashion and shopping destinations are Dubai, Hong Kong, London, and Tokyo.

Birth Tourism

Although giving birth in another country is not a new idea, this is a fairly new trend going around in the tourism industry. Couples are choosing to travel to other countries with the purpose of having their child born abroad in order to gain citizenship. There are now specialized agencies for medical and immigration processes to facilitate travelers with this form of tourism. Some may point out that there are ethical debates to be had regarding this trend. The main concern is the act of doling out citizenship or residency as well as the strain on medical facilities and the local community by having people come in to birth their child. However, we also know that all forms of tourism bring in money which helps the economy. Some famous destinations for birth tourism include Hong Kong, Canada, the United States, Brazil, and Mexico.

Wellness Tourism

If you are looking to travel with the purpose of joining a retreat, experiencing massage therapy, and partaking in some meditation or yoga classes with a side of adventure, then you are looking at wellness tourism. It’s all about improving physically, mentally, and spiritually. It involves eating well and is very much health and education-centered. During retreats, you may learn about traditional healing practices of one or many cultures and other alternative forms of therapy for the mind and body, as well as food, nutrition, and cooking. These retreats or trips usually have a guide or host and a structured schedule that you will follow for all the various wellness activities. You will also probably visit some hot springs, cold springs, lagoons, or waterfalls. The great outdoors is very important to this kind of tourism. Wellness tourism spots are usually set in nature and the lodging is usually close to a natural landscape or attraction. Some well-known wellness tourism hubs are Indonesia, Thailand, Costa Rica, India, and New Zealand. Some spots that are well-visited are the Canyon Ranch in Arizona, Hakone in Japan, and Blue Lagoon in Iceland. Wellness tourism combines health, fitness, nutrition, education, and travel all in one trip.

Business Tourism

The business traveler is a powerful kind of changemaker to a destination. Well-seasoned business professionals have a little more to spend than let’s say the average backpacker. Therefore, although there may not be many of them compared to the other types of travelers, they are mighty in their spending. Business travelers often opt to stay at more expensive hotels and eat and drink at more exclusive restaurants and bars. This is because concentrated business hubs tend to have establishments with a higher standard when it comes to accommodation and restaurants. A reason for a business traveler to go from one destination to another could have to do with attending meetings or conferences, attending international business events, as well as exhibitions. When we think of business destinations we probably think of New York City, London, Tokyo and Shanghai. However, there are other business destinations that have emerged and are emerging such as Singapore, Paris, Sydney, Shenzhen, Barcelona, and Dubai. It’s also important to note that the nature of business is a full spectrum. From technology, to corporate, and finance, business tourism encompasses all kinds of professionals from all different fields.
